Background Statement:
Claire and Chuck Pelton offered their first College Board- endorsed AP* Summer Institute at Lake Tahoe in 2006. From that year on, they have directed two AP* Summer Institutes each year at the following campuses: Sierra Nevada College, Lake Tahoe; Stanford University, Palo Alto; Stevenson School, Pebble Beach; Pepperdine University, Malibu; and Gabrielino High School, San Gabriel.

Their institutes have earned the reputation of offering outstanding presenters selected both for their subject matter expertise and their extraordinary presentations guaranteed to keep their participants lively and involved from 8:00 to 3:30 each day of the Institute. Additionally, their institutes are located within stunning locations from Lake Tahoe to Malibu, each one conducive to learning, contemplation, and peaceful relaxation during after-class hours.
Claire and Chuck Pelton have 50 years of teaching AP* English between them, Claire at Los Altos H.S. in Los Altos and Chuck at Homestead H.S. in Cupertino. They both earned their B.A. degrees in English and their M.A. degrees in education (Curriculum) at Stanford University.
Claire also served as Director of Curriculum in the San Jose Unified School District and as Director of Academic Services for the Western Regional Office of The College Board. Chuck served as an Assistant Principal at Homestead High School and as an instructor in the Foothill College Writing Center. Chuck has both written and published poetry.
Prior to joining the College Board as an employee, Claire served on a number of College Board committees, among them the AP* English Test Development Committee, the Council on Academic Affairs, the SAT-Verbal Advisory Panel, and as a member of the Board of Trustees. Claire further served as the founding vice chair of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
